The 1990-91 UNLV team is one of the most dominant regular-season squads the sport has seen. The Runnin’ Rebels tore through their schedule unbeaten and reached the national semifinal at 34-0, widely regarded as the favorite to finish the job. There they met Duke in a rematch of the previous year’s championship, and Duke pulled off the upset. UNLV finished 34-1 — perfect until the second-to-last game they needed to win.

2015 Kentucky — 38-1

More recently, the 2014-15 Kentucky team pushed perfection about as far as any modern program has. The Wildcats won their first 38 games, an extraordinary run in an era built to prevent exactly that. In the national semifinal they ran into Wisconsin, which ended the streak and the dream in one night. Kentucky finished 38-1. It remains the closest a team has come to matching Indiana’s feat in the modern game, and it still ended a game short.

1976 Rutgers — into the semifinals unbeaten

The same season Indiana went 32-0, Rutgers authored its own remarkable run. The Scarlet Knights reached the national semifinals with a perfect record, one of the last teams to carry an unbeaten mark that deep into the bracket. Their run ended in the semifinal, and they did not finish the year unbeaten. It is a reminder that even in a season with a perfect champion, being flawless right up until the final weekend still guarantees nothing.

1979 Indiana State — 33-1

Larry Bird’s 1978-79 Indiana State Sycamores went 33-0 all the way to the national championship game. The final was one of the most-watched college basketball games ever, against a Michigan State team led by Magic Johnson. Michigan State won, and Indiana State finished 33-1 — perfect until the very last game of the season. No team has ever come closer to the finish line without crossing it.
